The Gatekeepers to London's Underground World

22-25 September at Protein Studios

London’s streets are filled with secret subterranean passages. Vast cavernous tubes that hold our electricity, our water, our transport and the coal that pushed us into the industrial revolution.

Part of London Design Festival, Overlooked is an exhibition by Pentagram Partner Marina Willer that celebrates the gatekeepers to this underground world: street covers.

Each cover has been painstakingly reproduced using the tenets of brass rubbings — a practice traditionally applied to religious objects. These detailed negative images have been enlarged, overlaid and made neon, exposing the intricacies, nuances and decorative flourishes of these often missed masterpieces of industrial and graphic design.
